Pottery

I’d never participated in a pottery sale, but around 2016 on a whim, decided to participate in our local Potter’s guild pottery sale. I'd been making vessel forms throughout my career but they were usually for sculptures or very sculptural. I saw pottery as simple and quick, but could not have been more wrong.

Informed by my experience with painting, I choose a clean, simple approach that would allowed me to focus on the formal aspects of pottery. Over time this a matte off-white base overlaid with colours has evolved, the colours, glazes and forms improved, but the principles have remained the same.

All vessels are high fired stoneware with a matte white base overlaid with coloured glazes. My inspiration for the painted surface is drawn from many realistic, art historical, literary and material based sources
